There's a few simple things that you can do to take better photos of your kids, without needing your own photo studio. You can easily take great photos of your kids in your own home if you can do a few simple things! The photos I am posting in this blog are 100% straight out of the camera, no editing. You can do this too!
The MOST IMPORTANT thing in a photo is LIGHT!!! The best place to take photos is in a room with lots of natural light! Think about it.... when you take a selfie, does it look better in your dimly lit bathroom mirror, or close to a nice big window? The same goes for your photos! North or south facing windows are the best because the light is diffused, and you don't have the sun blaring through but if you only have east/west windows, wait until the sun is past shining straight in. You want your subject facing towards the light, or the light at least coming from the side.
In the photo above, Clark is facing towards the window, which brings lots of natural light onto his face and makes his eyes nice and bright!
You will also notice in that photo that the background is fairly tidy, with nothing that really pulls your eye away from his sweet baby blues!! The next thing we need to talk about is the area you are taking your photos. Obviously life happens, and sometimes your house is messy. There's toys and laundry everywhere (at least there is in my house 80% of the week) but having the spot you take your photos in free from clutter will make a big difference. Keep the distractions out!
See the difference in this photo?? All that junk on the couch is distracting! If you are making the effort to have a mini photo session, even while your kids are just playing, take the time to tidy up!
There's just one last tip for you! Make it FUN!! If you kids dread seeing you bring out that camera, change up your methods! Stop trying to take the perfect photo and just let them do what they want to do! My kids love coming up with their own poses and adding in their stuffies, and telling me silly jokes while we "work". The more you stress about getting everything right, the more your kids feel it! Just relax, and they will too! We love to tell jokes, make fart noises and just be silly during our photo sessions! -- Even dog's tails photo bombing can't fully wreck a great photo :)
I lied, I have one more tip. Keep your camera out! Keep it on the counter, or coffee table, or dining room table. If it's handy, you will reach for it more often that if it's packed away in a bag somewhere. Just use it, and use it often and you will end up with some amazing candid photos of your kids that you will both treasure for the years to come!
