I often see moms complaining on their Facebook feeds each fall about how terrible their child's school photo was that year, accompanied by a photo of the proofs. Normally the comments section is a 50/50 split of their friends agreeing and laughing and their other friends telling them "Hey, that's your kid.... messy hair or bad smile, they are still CUTE!"
I am DEFINITELY in column B. To be honest, I think the "worse" the photo, the better it is!
I LOVE this photo of me from Grade Two.... every time I look at it, I laugh. And you know what? I bet my mom does too. A smile like that is quite common in school photos. So is bad hair, goofy facial expressions and bad outfits(especially if you are like me and had no idea it was picture day)! Do you realize how long that photographer has with your kids? Probably about 15 seconds. They get to snap the shutter a few times and that's it. In an average session I take over 100 photos and only show you a small fraction of that. You know why? Because half of them look like the bad school photo! Kids are NOT easy to photograph, especially in 15 seconds!!
You guys. I am sharing these AWFUL and embarrassing photos of me to make a point. My mom has a ton of great photos of me from growing up. Lots of them candid and some from a professional photographer. Each one of those photos is a memory and serves a purpose. The school photo hung on the wall for a year and then got put away, the beautiful professional photos stuck around a little longer and the candids FILL photo albums that I still love to look at. I love each of them.
Please give your school photographers a break! They are doing the best they can. Embrace that bad photo!! -- And if you want some great ones, go out and hire a professional for a full length session every year or two. Your kids will treasure each photo when they are older, I promise every penny you spend on pictures whether they are from school, a pro, or your own developing is NEVER a penny wasted.
